Amos J. White III

Amos J. White III was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1964, to a father who was an public school administrator, former jazz trumpeter, symphonic conductor and an successful attorney mother.

At an early age Amos became an accomplished bassist, learning to play symphonic music at the age of 8 on the contra basso and later playing bass guitar at age 12. Learning from professionally trained musicians in elementary school led Amos to junior symphony performance with his middle school and high school symphony orchestras, string choir at Bexley High School and also to perform in the Columbus Symphony Cadet Orchestra and later Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra. His influences were dually powerful in shaping his artistic direction. Largely attracted to rock and funk in an era where the disco beat was a predominating cultural driver, Amos found his niche in cultivating rhythyms to influence a groups sound from his musical position as a bassist.

Amos performed in bands from age 13 with a brief appearance in the Scott Steelman in 1981 then finding his way into his first collaboration with the late pianist Charlie Ballenger, forming "Raven" with Charlie (piano), April Denny (vocals), Thad Tibbles (drums) and Amos on bass. After the addition of Peter Waldman on guitars and Bart Schneider replacing Tibbles, Raven quickly moved into the local Columbus scene. After 3 years together, the band broke up in 1983 when the young artists were presented with their first contract deferring to pursue the academic careers in lieu of the rock stardom that was sweeping young acts up across the U.S., like Def Leppard and In Living Color.

"Raven" was by far the greatest accomplishment for Amos White as an artist. Each band member was an accomplished artist musician, classically trained at an early age. In this band Amos found an outlet to begin composing lyrics. Although the band never went on to publish any of its own songs, Amos developed his musical hand and poetic ear in Raven.

From Bexley, Amos White went on to study Political Science at Wittenberg University in 1983. In his freshman year, he again performed with the Wittenberg Orchestra after which he abandoned symphonic performance altogether. However, at this time he chose to focus his creative talent in composing haiku poetry. He was recognized for his unique American interpretations of the Japanese art form receiving First Place in the 1987 Haiku Writing Contest of "The Witt Literary Journal".

In college he performed in 3 cover bands of which only one, The Probes," remained in tact to travel Ohio performing small gigs and local bars with a unique blend of college party songs and rock standards.

Amos White is a published Haiku Poet and Internet Evangelist and public speaker at http://www.amoswhite3.com/ who lives in Alameda, California with his family.
